The following how to guide covers removing and refitting the E92 auto gear shifter knob.

Although the images are from my E92 335i, the steps should apply to all E90, E91, E92 and E93 vehicles.

Tools and Parts Required

  • M Performance gear shifter (optional)
    • P/N 25162153758

This is a very simple job, but not immediately obvious. You'll need to remove the gear shifter if you want to remove the CCC or CIC module (as I'd done in the images), and if you want to upgrade to the M Performance gear shifter (P/N 25162153758).

Step 1

Make sure the car is in Park (P) and off.

Step 2

To remove the gear shifter pull directly upwards along the axis of the shifter. Be very careful doing this as you could end up giving yourself a black eye. There is no need to pull the trigger.

Step 3

Refitting is just a case of pushing it back on 'til it clicks into place.
