Step 1

The E90 series of vehicles locates the battery behind the right hand side boot (trunk) trim. You will need to remove this to gain access to the battery, Locate the quarter turn plastic fixing at the top of the boot trim panel with the BMW Tool Kit and First Aid Kit in. Twist it through 90° and pull towards you.

Step 2

With the access panel fully removed, you will be able to see the battery. Using your 10mm spanner, or 10mm socket and ratchet if you'd prefer, undo the circled nut on top of the negative terminal.

Step 3

After loosening the nut, pull the whole connector away from the battery terminal. To avoid the connector coming in contact whilst you are working on the car, you'll want to insulate it. A glove works great for this.

Step 4

Wait for 10mins prior to working on any electrical components, just to give the latent charge chance to dissipate from the system.

Reconnecting is just a reverse of these steps, however, note that when reconnecting the negative terminal it will spark, this is normal.
